Pull-through is the sales and marketing activity that moves product off the shelf after it's been placed, things like displays, tastings, staff education, and reorder follow-up. Without it, a placement just sits there until a distributor or retailer decides it isn't worth the shelf space anymore.
Placement is not the finish line
Getting a brand onto a shelf, a menu, or a POD is a real win, and it's often where the celebration happens. But a placement with no pull-through behind it is fragile. If nothing is driving sell-through, velocity stalls, and stalled velocity is exactly what gets a brand deprioritized or pulled entirely at the next reset.
What pull-through actually looks like
- In-store or on-premise displays that make a product visible beyond its shelf slot
- Tastings that get product in front of the actual customer, not just the buyer
- Staff education, so a bartender or shelf associate can speak to the product confidently
- Reorder follow-up, catching an out-of-stock before it becomes a lost account
Pitch, Placement, Pull-Through
This is the whole sequence, and skipping the third step is the most common mistake brands make when they try to do distribution without a dedicated field team. The pitch gets the meeting. The placement gets the shelf. Pull-through is what turns that shelf space into actual revenue, and it's ongoing work, not a one-time event.
